This approach breaks down time management into relatively simple, mechanical steps: recording, reviewing, and summarizing.
By explicitly understanding how time is allocated, it employs a mild form of guilt to motivate increased efficiency and leverages the sense of achievement gained from better time use to cultivate and sustain self-control.
The 17 hours of wakefulness each day are categorized into five main segments, marked in half-hour units (totaling 34 segments per day; the origin of the "34 coins" analogy):

<li>Blue: guilt-free play time — engaging in entertainment, such as conversing with long-lost friends.</li>
<li>Green: rest time — activities like eating, relaxing, or walking.</li>
<li>Yellow: quality work time — focused and efficient working periods.</li>
<li>Orange: mandatory work time — obligatory tasks that lack intrinsic interest, such as attending uninteresting university classes or dull meetings.</li>
<li>Red: procrastination time — unproductive activities like browsing social media to delay work.</li>
</ul>
This categorization is tracked daily with a five-minute review before bedtime. Weekly summaries then analyze the proportion of each category relative to total weekly hours. This process helps assess whether one's time is being utilized effectively.
The value of this method lies in its capacity to gradually transform lifestyle habits and reduce procrastination. Achieving a sense of accomplishment through consistent recording reinforces self-discipline. Additionally, without documentation, actions appear nonexistent; recording reveals where time is actually spent, serving as evidence that one has actively experienced their daily routine.
